Smile, Smile, Smile Education Project

“Smile, Smile, Smile” was an orchestral education project for young musicians from North Wales to perform a new piece called “A Veiled Smile” by Jonathan Guy with the NEW Sinfonia at the North Wales International Music Festival 2018. This project was a collaboration between NWIMF, NEW Sinfonia, Denbighshire Music Co-operative and Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias.

This project was inspired by St Asaph brothers George and Felix Powell. The lyrics were penned by George Henry Powell while the music was composed by his older brother Felix Lloyd Powell, who was an organist at the cathedral in St Asaph where they lived. Jonathan has given a new twist on the famous World War I marching song, Pack up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag, and was performed in the place where it was written by two brothers.

We were proud this project featured national recognition for BBC Music Day with features on the BBC Network News and the BBC Radio 4 PM programme.
